Our Founder

Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang is a renowned scientist, visionary thinker, and founder of Beacon in the Cosmos LLC, with over three decades of groundbreaking contributions to satellite remote sensing, space science, climate research, and humanity’s future in the cosmos.

As a former Senior Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology, Dr. Jiang led pioneering studies that advanced global understanding of atmospheric dynamics, planetary systems, and the long-term habitability of Earth and beyond. His scientific work bridges disciplines—from astrophysics to planetary exploration and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence—reflecting his lifelong quest to understand humanity’s place in the universe.

Dr. Jiang has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and led numerous international collaborations that have shaped NASA’s Earth and planetary science missions. Among his most recognized efforts is the “A Beacon in the Galaxy” project—a modern update to the historic Arecibo Message—and his leadership in reviving the Voyager Golden Record for a new generation through the Humanity’s Message to the Stars (HMTS) initiative.

He is a Fellow of American Meteorological Society (AMS) and former Chairman of the AMS Committee on Atmospheric Chemistry. He currently serves as President of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Global Environmental Change Section and has served as Editor for AGU’s journal of Earth and Space Science, and Editor-in-Chief of Earth and Space Science Open Archive. He is also a Member of National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Human Mars Exploration Science Strategy Committee.

Beyond his research, Dr. Jiang is deeply committed to mentoring young scientists and fostering global collaboration through education, outreach, and the creative fusion of science and culture.

Vision

Guided by the belief that humanity’s future depends on both scientific progress and moral wisdom, Dr. Jiang’s work, spanning research, education, and outreach, seeks to ensure that our technological evolution remains aligned with empathy, creativity, and purpose. Through Beacon in the Cosmos LLC, he continues to champion a message of unity, responsibility, and wonder—lighting the path toward a brighter, sustainable future among the stars.
