About Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang

Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang is a Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, with over three decades of experience leading research in satellite remote sensing, space science, astrophysics, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. He manages JPL's Aerosol and Cloud Satellite Remote Sensing Group, overseeing two operational satellites in Earth orbit that contribute to our understanding of atmospheric processes and climate dynamics. Dr. Jiang has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, maintaining a world leading position in relevant research fields.

Dr. Jiang spearheaded the “A Beacon in the Galaxy” project to update the historic Arecibo Message and is currently actively engaged in revising the Voyager Golden Records, crafting a new message from humanity to the cosmos. His leadership extends to serving as the president of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Global Environmental Change section and as the editor-in-chief of AGU's Earth and Space Science Open Archive.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jiang has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the AMS Scientific and Technological Activities Commission Outstanding Service Award (2024), The Banner I. Miller Award (2023), the JPL Voyager Award (2022), inclusion in The Reuters List of World’s Top Climate Scientists (2020), the Ed Stone Award for Outstanding Research Paper (2019), and multiple NASA medals: the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal (2019) and Exceptional Achievement Medals (2013, 2010). He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Human Exploration of Mars.
